Ch De Laubade Armagnac 1980 750ml Bas Armagnac, Gascony, France- One of the finest estates in Armagnac. Vintage results from grapes 100% harvested the same year—Amber in color with pronounced floral and vanilla aromas. Fruit and cedar flavors lead to a round, pleasant finish.

In Gascony, where it began in 1870, Chateau de Laubade now cultivates 260 acres of grapes for its brandies. One of Laubade’s claims to fame, if not the whole thing, is that it is one of the few estates that grow all four varieties of grapes permitted for Armagnac: ugni blanc, Folle Blanche, colombard, and bacon.

It also happens to be the region’s biggest producer of bacon grapes. The distillery also notes that its blends are age twice as long as require by regulations.

It is both floral and industrial in equal measure, with notes of linen and lavender in the nose.
Before retreating to its more astringent aromas that remain unnecessarily long on the finish, the palate is more alluring, exhibiting caramel sauce and fresh apricots.

Chateau de Laubade Bas Armagnac Signature – Another very young brandy; this one’s unique in that part of the blend was age in second-fill barrels previously use to age dry white wines from Bordeaux. It has a little bit more proof as well.

Quite perfumed and floral, this is a fresher, brighter spirit with more fruit evident on the nose. It’s also noticeably hotter on the tongue, though it’s still quite gentle, which helps to focus one’s attention on the bigger, brighter florals in the mix.

Violets are curiously strong here, and the caramel character is more aggressive. There’s a bit of spice on the finish, which is otherwise youthful, fresh, and lively — albeit rather simplistic.
